JRCPF in partnership with the DST, Govt. of India will offer CASE grant across all colleges of Science & Technology in India starting this year. Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation (JRCPF) in partnership with the Department of Science & Technology (DST) http://dst.gov.in/, will be offering the Carter Academic Service Entrepreneur (CASE) Grant across India to all college students of science and technology starting this year. This will include a nationwide competition among college students for community service projects to solve societal problems and link to their academic programs. Applied innovation (intervention) of Science & Technology by students would be a key component for selection as a winner.

To support the students for this challenge JRCPF and DST will work together to offer coaching, workshops, exhibitions, and other activities. More information to follow.

2008 Michigan JRCPA
June 20, 2008 – LANSING, MI – Alma College and Pine River Superfund Citizen Task Force received the 2008 Carter Partnership Award. This campus-community partnership was recognized June 19, 2008, at the Fox Theatre in Detroit at the annual Governor’s Service Awards.

June 3, 2008 – National JRCPA winner announced by President Jimmy Carter & Mrs. Roslynn Carter in Atlanta!
Portland State University, and 112 community based organizations in Oregon, win the National-Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award for Campus Community Collaboration for the Watershed Stewardship Program. The announcement was made at the National Conference of Corporation for National & Community Service at the world Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia. This program has led over 27,000 community volunteers donating a quarter million hours to install 80,000 plants and restore 50 acres of watershed along two miles of river. Individual projects have been led and supported by 700 students working as part of class projects, resulting in two master’s theses and three research articles. Read more…

JRCPA-National 2008 Finalists Announced
Following three programs have been selected as the finalists for the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award for Campus-Community Collaboration (JRCPA) as examples of best practices for campus community partnerships.

Carter Partnership Award (JRCPA) will be presented by President & Mrs. Carter at the National Conference for Volunteering & Service on June 3, 2008 in Atlanta, Ga. JRCPF is also participating in the Immersion Learning Session to be held at The Carter Center on Monday, June 2, 2008.

Southeastern student awarded Carter Foundation grant.

GE Foundation is donating to JRCPF through its matching funds program.

The winner of this year’s Carter Academic Service Entrepreneur Grant is Robin Miller, an MSc in Human Rights student working with the Kurdish Human Rights Project aimed at providing the Kurdish London Diaspora with legal support, training, and information to stimulate dialogue surrounding barriers to rights. As part of this project, there will be a conference, followed by small round-table discussion, and a series of training accredited by the Law Society of England and Wales.

2 Stetson students get Carter backing. The $1,000 grants encourage academic outreach programs in the community.

Two Stetson University student projects are the first in Florida to be awarded Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation’s Carter Academic-Service Entrepreneur grants for service programs that incorporate academic learning and community involvement.

JRCPF partners with Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad, to reach college students across India for JRCPF’s global movement of civic engagement.

JRCPA winner announced in New Hampshire: Saint Anselm College and Girls Inc.
Mrs. Carter presented the Carter Partnership Trophies and the Carter Certificates of Merit to the winner in Manchester on Nov. 6, 2007. The partnership also received a check in the amount of $10,000. The other finalists were Keene State College - Big Brothers Big Sisters and Colby-Sawyer College - Kearsarge Regional School District. They received the Carter Certificates of Merit and checks in the amount of $7,000 and $5,000 respectively.

JRCPA-Germany President & Mrs. Carter inaugurated JRCPA at the Universität Lüneburg on October 4, 2007. Campus community program from the University of Mannheim won the first prize followed by, Leuphana (University of Lueneburg) and University of Duisburg-Essen.

JRCPF and Panjab University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote academic civic engagement through college and university students across the state of Panjab, India and with Witwaterstrand University in Johannesburg, to promote academic civic engagement in South Africa.

CASE at the London School of Economics

Examples of grants given to students for projects in countries like Germany, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the US.

Problem: Equipment to sterilize medical instruments requires electricity, which is not available in remote villages.
Solution: A solar-powered autoclave sterilizer developed by a mechanical engineering student with a JRCPF grant.

Problem: Low income neighborhoods lack wheelchair access to residences.
Solution: engineering students designed, purchased materials and installed wheelchair ramps.

Problem: Cottage industry products lack market visibility.
Solution: Computer science student developed a website to broadcast product images and specifications worldwide.

Problem: Petroleum-fueled taxis cost too much for physically handicap adults in low income areas.
Solution: A mechanical engineering student with a grant from JRCPF modified golf carts to run from a solar charging powered station.

Problem: Unsafe drinking water in Barombi village in Camaroon.
Solution: Engineering students used hydraulic design and a water treatment plan to supply potable water.

Problem: Smoke from indoor stoves causes respiratory disease in a refugee camp.
Solution: An economics major developed and distributed improved cook stoves, with training on use and monitoring air quality levels.

Problem: Run-off water from monsoon rains causes floods rather than creating reservoirs.
Solution: Water resource students received a JRCPF grant and trained village residents to plant and nurture vegetation that slows and stores runoff water for the dry season.
